The most beloved inhabitants of Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura, one of the most beautiful gems of the Canary Islands, attracts visitors not only with its fabulous beaches and volcanic landscapes, but also with a truly special, gentle little inhabitant that captivates the hearts of tourists: the free-living squirrels.
But how did these charming little animals end up on the island, and why do they feel so comfortable there?
The squirrels that live on Fuerteventura are not actually native and were brought to the island by chance. In the 1960s, a pair of squirrels arrived on the island as pets, but their desire for freedom proved stronger and they soon escaped into the wild. Since they were quite popular pets at the time, their numbers on the island multiplied within a few years.
Although they are considered an invasive species and technically not part of the natural ecosystem, some locals and tourists still welcome them due to their friendly nature. However, local authorities are concerned about the squirrels' presence because they have no natural predators, so they have quickly multiplied and can negatively impact local native animals or vegetation.

My encounter with squirrels at the Calderón Hondo volcano
One of my most special travel experiences happened at the Calderón Hondo volcano, where I happened to meet these charming squirrels up close.
As I was walking along the path to the top of the volcano, they suddenly appeared, watching us curiously. I didn’t want to leave this place – the calm and kindness that the squirrels’ proximity gave me was so captivating. At first, they approached cautiously, but soon they came so close that we even gave some of them fresh water to drink and if I had had nuts or seeds with me, I would have offered them. I was completely amazed by how friendly and trusting they were. While we were looking at them and making friends with them, I was lost in thought: moments like these are worth traveling for. When it’s not just the landscapes or sights, but the small, unexpected encounters that make a trip unforgettable.

The magic of travel The squirrels of Fuerteventura reminded us that the true gift of travel is not always in the famous landmarks or spectacular landscapes, but in the small encounters between people and nature. These unforgettable experiences truly enrich our lives and give us lasting memories that we recall years later with a smile on our faces.

If you ever visit Fuerteventura, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Calderón Hondo volcano and maybe you'll even make friends with the squirrels - who knows what special moments await you as you admire the magnificent panorama!
