The word batik is of Malay origin, meaning drop or dot, referring to the unique technique of decorating textiles with wax. Its history dates back several centuries and all the way to Indonesia, where local artists created the original technology with various motifs and colors. This process has now spread to Thailand with its own unique style and way of seeing. It is primarily created from exceptional natural materials such as cotton, silk and linen. Because these materials allow for the creation of rich and durable patterns with this traditional technique. Thus, it can be interpreted not only as an artistic expression, but also as an expression of the richness and diversity of Thai culture.

The process involves the creation of waxed patterns, which are then later colored - in the past, by hand. This allows traditional Thai design elements such as lotus and elephant motifs to be easily applied in unique forms, faithfully reflecting the local culture and belief system. Batik initially involves waxing, where the artist coats the areas of the textile that he does not want to paint with wax, thus preventing the dye from seeping through into the area. Once the wax layer is removed, the beautiful contrasts and details that are the unique characteristics of Thai batik become visible.
